(NBC News) A new trend is starting to pop up in the world of plastic surgery. Doctors say they’re seeing more women who are swapping out their larger implants for smaller, more conservative ones.

Many women now prefer smaller breast implants

On the sunny beaches of Florida, it’s not uncommon to see beautiful bodies. But, could what we perceive as “beautiful” be in transition?

“I see the change now. We’re not seeing those people wanting such large implants,” said Dr. Stanley Gulin, a cosmetic plastic surgeon in Naples.  Dr. Gulin says a growing number of women are losing faith in the concept that “bigger is better” when it comes to their breasts.  ”It’s a much more reasonable thing to just downsize, so I think there is a general trend,” he said.  And he’s not the only one spotting that trend.

“Now, I’m seeing people who have had bigger implants for 10-12 years, and they come in and say ‘I want something smaller, it’s affecting my lifestyle,’” said plastic surgeon Dr. Manny Pena.  He says he is seeing as many as two-dozen women a year who want to downsize for reasons such as their breasts are getting in the way of activities, they want a slimmer appearance, they want a more natural look and many just want to get rid of the back pain that can sometimes be associated with larger breasts.

Aside from having what some would consider a more natural appearance, swapping out your implants from larger ones has other benefits, too.  ”You have less wear and tear on the tissue, the breast just keeps it’s shape much better, you don’t have gravity working against that large implant,” explained Dr. Gulin.

And though it may surprise some people, some guys we spoke with agree.  ”I think that’s a good idea. I don’t prefer a girl with a large breast area,” said Naples resident Patrick Baker.  ”You shouldn’t have to pay a lot of money just to make yourself stand out more,” added Brian Stephenson.

So, is it safe to say smaller breasts are now en vogue?  ”I think we’re just starting to see a turn in that direction,” Dr. Pena said.  He added that it’s important to consider your height, weight, frame and lifestyle when deciding which size breasts are best for you.
